A Judo Story That Began With One Email — Five Years of Connection From Austria to Yokohama — a young judoka who comes back every summer, and became part of our Judo family. A Journey That Began With One Email Summer 2026. Once again, a young judoka from Austria came to Yokohama to train with us. His judogi packed in his bag, he stepped onto the tatami in Yokohama. Our connection with him goes all the way back to July 2022 . It all started with one email: “I want to come to Japan and train in judo!” He wanted to improve the judo he had learned in Austria and take his skills to the next level. And so, he made the journey all the way to Yokohama to train...

🔥 Our Groundwork Technique Series Is Heating Up on Instagram!

Since the end of last year, we’ve been sharing a series called "Ne-Waza Kenkyukai" (Groundwork Technique Study Group) via Instagram Reels.

It all began during my weekly Tuesday training sessions at the Nunoda Judo labo.

I thought, “If there were videos, the students could review them repeatedly, and movements that are hard to explain with words could be better understood visually.”

With that thought in mind, I started uploading videos—and the response was overwhelming. Our follower count jumped from about 500 to over 3,600 in just three months!

The Key to Victory Lies in Groundwork

Through seriously coaching elementary and junior high school students, I’ve come to realize once again that groundwork is the key to winning.

When you can’t finish with a standing throw, how do you capitalize on an opponent who’s gone down on all fours?

Whether or not you can seize that moment can completely change the outcome of a match.

In high school, my mentor would always say:

"Be strong standing and grounded. If you can’t do groundwork, you can’t win!"

Now more than ever, those words resonate with me deeply.

Groundwork in the Global Judo Scene

In recent years, international judo rules have evolved to recognize and reward sustained groundwork attacks.

That’s why I want young judoka—elementary, junior high, and high school students—to fully understand how important and deep groundwork can be.

It’s with that passion that I continue uploading new videos every week.

More to Come—Stay Tuned!

Currently, since our focus is on younger students, we don’t feature chokes or joint locks—but we plan to gradually introduce them in future videos.

I’m also considering writing more in-depth blog posts that break down each video—one by one!

If there’s a technique or situation you want to learn more about, feel free to leave a comment!
