3 How to Apply Obi-Tori Gaeshi in Judo: Reversing a Turtled Opponent (Junior High Training #3)
This week was a six-period day, so practice was a short one-hour session.
It followed a flow of "repetitive practice → technique study → randori," with an emphasis on groundwork.
Technique Study: “How to Reverse an Opponent Turtled Up with Tight Elbows”
One student asked how to turn over an opponent lying face down with tightly closed elbows, so I introduced the Obi-tori Gaeshi (belt grab reversal).
We watched a video from the “Newaza Kenkyukai” Instagram page together and broke down the key points.
Technique Breakdown
Grab the belt, insert your leg, and scoop the armpit
- Scoop under the opponent’s right armpit with your left hand
- Use your right hand to pull out and control the opponent’s arm
- Pull the leg with your left hand
- Use your left leg to kick out their lower leg and free your own leg
- As soon as their leg is cleared, switch your hips and pin with Kuzure Kami-Shiho-Gatame
- Keep holding and controlling the opponent’s arm with your right hand throughout
Key Points & Importance
Every detail counts — from how you grip the belt to how you use your legs and isolate the arm.
Mastering this reversal can significantly boost your match-winning chances.
For female athletes especially, the transition from standing to groundwork is critical.
Keep drilling this reversal until it becomes part of your arsenal!
Side Note: National Championships and the Students
With the excitement of the All Japan Judo Championships still fresh, I headed to the school.
I asked, “Did anyone watch the championships on TV?” — and to my surprise, not a single hand went up.
I had hoped at least a few had seen it…
It reminded me that I need to do more to convey the richness and excitement of judo,
so that students naturally want to watch and learn more.
