Griffin Judo Club Visits Yokohama

Ten Judoka Welcomed Friends from California

Keiko and Practice

In this blog, I share information about judo and intentionally use the term "keiko."

Dear judokas around the world, do you know the difference between "keiko" and "practice"?

What is "Keiko"?

"Keiko" refers to learning traditional arts or martial arts under the guidance of a master or teacher.

It strongly emphasizes tradition, etiquette, manners, rules, and especially learning from a master.

It is not only about mastering techniques but also about cultivating spirit and character.

What is "Practice"?

On the other hand, "practice" refers to repeated activities performed individually to improve skills and techniques.

It focuses on enhancing practical skills through repetition and self-training.

In short,

"Keiko" is learning from a master, inheriting tradition and spirit.
"Practice" is self-driven effort to refine skills.

The Teachings of Master Jigoro Kano

Judo founder, Master Jigoro Kano, left the following teachings:

Judo is the way of utilizing one's mental and physical strength in the most efficient manner.
The training involves cultivating and refining the body and spirit through the practice of attack and defense.
By mastering the essence of this way, one perfects oneself and contributes to society, which is the ultimate goal of judo training.

The "practice" mentioned here refers to honing attack and defense techniques.

Meanwhile, "keiko" suggests cultivating the body and mind through practice, mastering the essence of the way, perfecting oneself, and becoming a person who contributes to society.

What is Keiko?

"Keiko" is not merely training for skill improvement.

Under the guidance of a teacher, it involves learning etiquette, manners, and fundamental movements, understanding the tradition and culture of judo, and simultaneously working on character development and spiritual cultivation.

Through keiko, one strives for self-improvement and becoming a person who contributes to society.
