Griffin Judo Club Visits Yokohama

Ten Judoka Welcomed Friends from California

Nunoda Judo Labo This Week: Returning to the Basics Can Change Your Future

This week, six male participants joined Nunoda Judo Labo.
Though a small group, we were able to focus deeply and have an intensive practice session.

Once again, our theme was “Mastering the Basics.”
Building a strong foundation is the fastest path to strength—and the first step in discovering judo’s depth and joy.

 Newaza: Repeating Transitions from Tachi-waza

We focused on smooth transitions from standing techniques to groundwork.
The practice emphasized breaking the opponent’s posture with one’s favorite technique and seamlessly moving into a hold-down.

In matches, it's not just about pinning—it's about drawing a clear pathway from the throw to the ground.
I believe everyone gained a solid understanding of this through repetition.

 Escaping Yoko-shiho-gatame

After groundwork sparring, I noticed many didn’t know how to escape Yoko-shiho-gatame (side hold).
So we shifted gears to focus on this escape and practiced it repeatedly.

We went over those often-overlooked, yet essential defensive techniques in detail.

 Tachi-waza: Polishing Your Favorite Techniques

For standing techniques, we focused on drilling our favorite throws.
We also worked on connecting techniques that lead naturally into those favorite moves.

A new working adult joined us, and it was great to see people of all backgrounds training together across age and status.

We focus on basics every Tuesday, and apply them through sparring on Saturdays.
Even though it’s just twice a week, I hope each session opens at least one door of learning for our members.

That’s the mindset I bring to every practice.

These days, I aim to share the fun of judo with as many people as possible, finding new ways to teach and connect.

If this blog inspires even one person to think, “Maybe I’ll give judo a try”—I couldn’t be happier.

Let’s continue to train deeply, solidly, and with joy next week, too.
Together, let’s keep opening the door to the world of judo!
