Ten Judoka Welcomed Friends from California

Spring Cup 2025: A New Chapter for Young Judoka |

The Yokohama City Junior High School Judo Spring Cup, hosted by the Yokohama City Junior High School Athletic Federation, was held at the Kanagawa Prefectural Martial Arts Hall.

This tournament marked the first major event of the new judo season. I went to watch and cheer, as the students I coach on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays were competing.

This tournament welcomed both junior high school judo clubs and regional club teams.

Clubs with large numbers of students could participate with multiple teams (A, B, C, and so on). Boys competed in five-person teams, and girls in three-person teams.

There were 39 boys’ teams and 26 girls’ teams. The tournament began with a round-robin league phase, allowing each team to have five to six matches. The top teams from the leagues then advanced to the final tournament to vie for the championship.

Thanks to the league format, students had the chance to experience many matches in one tournament.

I thought it was an excellent system, offering invaluable match experience for these young athletes.

The students I coach were able to showcase techniques and movements they had practiced in training.

One student from the Nunoda Judo Labo used her height to execute a powerful O-Soto-Gari (major outer reap), followed by swift transitions from standing techniques to groundwork. He also demonstrated the Uchi-Mata (inner thigh throw) we had tirelessly practiced through 1,000 repetitions.

Another student from a junior high school judo club, whom I recently started supporting, secured a brilliant victory with a Seoi-Nage (shoulder throw) after last-minute advice during randori (sparring).

A match is a place to "test" the techniques honed through training.

Of course, not every attempt led to a victory.

However, the fact that each student could attempt a move they had practiced daily—even once—was a precious achievement.

Seeing the faces of students tear up after a loss reminded me of my own student days.

The burning desire to stand on the tatami of the Nippon Budokan, the dream of fighting through to victory—

Those pure memories came rushing back, making my heart swell with emotion.

Those bittersweet memories washed over me, and my heart was filled with emotion.

The students are now moving on to their next stages.

I want to continue teaching them with care and dedication, supporting each of their dreams with all my heart.

Thank you for reading to the end! I would be thrilled if you could continue supporting the growth of these young judoka!
