Ten Judoka Welcomed Friends from California

Explanation of Judo's Kuzushi Movement

In judo, the movement of "kuzushi," or breaking balance, is a crucial technique to unbalance the opponent and set up a successful throw. To understand this movement, it's essential to grasp the differentiation between pushing and pulling actions, and the corresponding body mechanics involved. The Role of Pushing Movements and the Scapula During kuzushi, there are instances where a forward pushing action is employed. The movement of the scapula (shoulder blades) is critical in this context. Similar to pushing a heavy object, the position of the shoulders shifts backward, requiring not only arm strength but also the effective transmission of force through the legs. For example, when pushing the opponent forward...

Enhancing Kuzushi with Hikite and Tsurite

In judo, achieving effective kuzushi (breaking balance) involves making your opponent's stance unstable in eight directions (forward, backward, left, right, and the four corners). This unstable state means the opponent's center of gravity is tilted in these directions. To achieve kuzushi, it is essential to use hikite (pulling hand) and tsurite (lifting hand) to unbalance the opponent in these eight directions. However, controlling the opponent's body solely with hikite and tsurite is difficult unless there is a significant difference in skill or physical size. To effectively progress kuzushi, it is crucial to utilize the entire body, including the hands, feet, hips, and core, to control and unbalance the opponent...
