Ten Judoka Welcomed Friends from California

7月21日（火）グリフィン柔道クラブ

先日の火曜日、一般稽古「布田塾」に、アメリカ・カリフォルニアの Griffin Judo Clubの皆さんが出稽古に来てくださいました。

土曜日の横浜土曜柔道会には毎週100名近い柔道家が集まりますが、 火曜日は雰囲気がまったく違います。 初心者、中高生、そして私を含めたシニア世代を中心に、およそ10名ほどで基本を大切にした稽古を続けています。

正直、不安でした。

「遠くカリフォルニアから来てくださる皆さんに、この稽古で満足していただけるだろうか。」

そこで土曜会メンバーや大学柔道部、地域柔道クラブへ声を掛けると、 数名が応援に駆け付けてくれました。 改めて、人とのつながりのありがたさを感じました。

さらに今回は事前申込フォームを活用し、 年齢、性別、段位、柔道歴、怪我の有無など必要最低限の情報を事前に確認。

その情報をもとに、 初心者には基本を丁寧に、 経験者には実戦的な内容を取り入れ、 一人ひとりが安全に、そして充実した90分を過ごせるよう工夫しました。

稽古終了後、Griffin Judo Clubのリーダーから

「とても素晴らしい稽古でした。」

という言葉をいただきました。 社交辞令だったのかもしれません。 それでも、その一言は本当に嬉しいものでした。

さらに応援に来てくれた日本人メンバーからも、

「今日は本当に良い稽古だった。」

という感想をいただきました。 少し悩み、少し工夫した時間は決して無駄ではありませんでした。

締めの「投げ込み」

私は最近、強く感じています。

国際交流とは、英語が話せることでも、立派な施設でもありません。
相手の立場になって考えること。
その積み重ねが、国境を越えて人と人をつないでいく。

いつか私もカリフォルニアを訪れ、 Griffin Judo Clubの皆さんと同じ畳で汗を流してみたいと思います。

この出会いを大切に育てながら、 横浜が世界中の柔道家にとって

「また帰ってきたい場所」

そう思っていただける道場を目指して、 これからも活動を続けていきます。

7/21(Tue) Griffin Judo Club

🇺🇸 Ten Judoka Welcomed Friends from California

This Tuesday, our weekday practice, Nunoda Juku, welcomed members of Griffin Judo Club from California, USA.

Unlike our Saturday sessions, where nearly 100 judoka gather every week, Tuesday practice is much smaller. Usually, around ten people train together—beginners, junior and senior high school students, and senior judoka like myself. Our focus is not spectacular throws, but solid fundamentals repeated with care.

To be honest, I was nervous.

"Would our simple practice be enough for guests who had traveled all the way from California?"

To make the evening even better, several members from our Saturday club, a university judo team, and local clubs came to support the practice. Their willingness to help reminded me once again how valuable our judo community is.

For the first time, we also made full use of an online registration form. By learning each participant's age, rank, years of experience, and injury history beforehand, we were able to tailor the practice to everyone's level.

Beginners focused on fundamentals. Experienced judoka enjoyed more challenging drills. Everyone trained safely while making the most of the 90-minute session.

After practice, the leader of Griffin Judo Club told us,

"It was an excellent training session."

Perhaps it was simply good manners. Even so, those words meant a great deal to me.

Several Japanese members who had come to support us also said,

"Today's practice was one of the best we've had."

At that moment, I felt that all the preparation had been worthwhile.

Recently, I have come to believe something very important.

International exchange is not about speaking perfect English.
It is not about having the biggest dojo.

It begins by thinking about the people standing in front of you.

That simple mindset is what builds friendships across borders.

One day, I hope to visit California and train alongside the members of Griffin Judo Club on their tatami.

Until then, we will continue building a dojo where judoka from around the world feel welcomed, respected, and inspired.
