Once again, a young judoka from Austria came to Yokohama to train with us. His judogi packed in his bag, he stepped onto the tatami in Yokohama. Our connection with him goes all the way back to July 2022 . It all started with one email: “I want to come to Japan and train in judo!” He wanted to improve the judo he had learned in Austria and take his skills to the next level. And so, he made the journey all the way to Yokohama to train...

The Essence of Judo: Understanding "Tsukuri"

In the practice of judo, the moment a technique is successfully executed is particularly moving.

Behind that decisive moment lies a crucial element known as "tsukuri."

"Tsukuri" refers to the act of disrupting your opponent's balance and then moving your body into the optimal position to execute a technique.

Yes, to effectively "create" a technique, it is essential to skillfully maneuver your body.

The Essence of Tai Sabaki

So, what does it mean to "maneuver" your body?

In previous discussions about "Happo no Kuzushi" (breaking balance in eight directions), we explained that it's important to shift your opponent's center of gravity to an advantageous position.

Tai sabaki, or body movement, involves moving your body in the correct direction to throw your opponent who has been unbalanced.

There are eight types of tai sabaki:

Right foot forward
Left foot forward
Right foot forward circular movement
Left foot forward circular movement
Right foot back
Left foot back
Right foot backward circular movement
Left foot backward circular movement

By maneuvering your body in this way, you can accurately respond to the direction in which you have unbalanced your opponent and apply the technique.

Practicing Techniques and Feeling the Emotion

For instance, if you disrupt your opponent to the right front corner, you would enter a seoi-nage (shoulder throw) using a right foot forward circular movement.

Without this specific tai sabaki, even if you manage to unbalance your opponent, you wouldn't be able to complete the throw.

When instructing judo beginners, it's important to master these six types of tai sabaki after learning "Happo no Kuzushi."

Doing so will enable them to effectively learn various throwing techniques such as hand throws, foot throws, hip throws, sacrifice throws, and side sacrifice throws.

Experiencing the Beauty of Judo and the Path to Mastery

Fully understanding and practicing the principles of judo's throwing techniques not only conveys the joy of judo but also serves as a shortcut to mastering the art.

Disrupting your opponent's balance, maneuvering your body, and executing a technique—these elements together create a sequence that is both beautiful and exhilarating.

Judo is more than just a sport; it is a martial art that seeks harmony between mind and body.

The joy and sense of accomplishment felt during the process of mastering techniques, along with the deepening understanding and trust gained through interactions with your opponent, all contribute to the allure of judo.

I encourage all beginners to grasp the importance of "tsukuri" and to dedicate themselves to practice.

The path of judo is indeed challenging, but the sense of achievement and the profound emotional rewards that await are unparalleled.

I sincerely hope that your journey in judo will be a remarkable one.
