A Lifelong Badge of Honor – Reflections from the 7th and 8th Dan Promotion Ceremony

This past week, the Kanagawa Judo Federation hosted a grand promotion ceremony celebrating promotions to 7th and 8th dan ranks. This prestigious event marks a major milestone in the life of a judoka. While promotions up to 6th dan occur annually, things change significantly from the 7th dan onward. Promotions to these ranks are only considered every two years and are granted only after careful review of one's lifetime contributions and achievements. Not only competitive results, but also contributions as a coach, referee, and efforts to promote and develop judo in the community and beyond are all taken into account. This year, seven distinguished judoka from Kanagawa were promoted to 7th dan.

 100th Anniversary Commemoration

October 29-30 was the 100th anniversary of the founding of our alma mater, Hongo Gakuen.

The Judo Club asked alumni to join them for a joint practice session with the current members.

A large number of alumni gathered to practice together with the current junior

and senior high school students for the first time in several years.

They practiced repetitions of Newaza, Randori, Tachi-waza Uchikomi, and Randori.

After completing the entire practice menu, we spent about two hours with the students, receiving instruction from the alumni and studying techniques.

I was able to practice with my lovely juniors.

Risk Prevention

The corona scourge is gradually easing, but it is still a problem.

Some of our alumni came from far away, and we confirmed that they were

negative by the antigen test prepared in advance before the practice.

In Yokohama, the situation has become much more relaxed, and I learned that

this thoroughness of risk countermeasures is, in a sense, a wonderful response.

YAKITORI=>Towel

One of the specialties of the school festival is the charcoal-grilled "yakitori"

that is served at the Judo Club's stall!

The yakitori is grilled over a charcoal fire and dipped in the excellent sauce made by 141 sensei, a former teacher of mine, to make the most delicious yakitori.

It is no exaggeration to say that the Judo Club's charcoal-grilled "Yakitori" was a popular stall at the Hongo Festival.

Forty years have passed since then.

This time, I was looking forward to the practice, but it was also the school festival,

and I was looking forward to eating the famous "Yakitori", but...

But we were not able to open our stall.

It seems that the school had imposed restrictions due to the Corona disaster.

Too bad (T0T)

Instead, we got a "HONGO JUDO CLUB" towel.

It looks like a muffler towel!

A towel with the name of the Judo Club on it for the 100th anniversary of

my alma mater!

It was another good memento for me.

A Night at SUGAMO

After practice, the alumni elder group members went out to Sugamo at night.

The area near my alma mater is already my hometown. It is just like my hometown,

 isn't it?

We were a small group, but we had a great time talking about judo over delicious

 drinks.

It is thanks to judo and my former teacher that we are able to communicate with each other beyond our age.

We all had a great time chatting about such things.

At the end of the day, we sang the school song of our alma mater in a small voice.

'Growing saplings for the pillars of our nation! We are proud of our school, Hongo Gakuen!' Really good school song!
