With the advice of our channel subscribers, we are now translating and subtitling our videos in English.
今回から数回にわたって、この字幕対応のスタート背景とその苦労についてお話ししたいと思います。
In the next few articles, we would like to talk about the background of the start of this subtitling service and the difficulties involved.
▶︎The reason
最初はポイントだけを日本語のテロップで対応していました。
At first, we only used Japanese subtitles for key points.
ある日、チャンネル登録者の方が説明を英語で知りたいと！
One day, one of our channel subscribers wanted to know the explanation in English!
お客様第一！と営業魂に火がつき、対応を進める事を決意したのです。
Customers first! and our sales spirit was ignited, and we decided to go ahead with the project.
そんな視聴者からの要望をがきっかけ、柔道は世界のJUDOだし前向きに進めよう！と取り組み始めました。
The viewer's request was the impetus for us to move forward with Judo, which is the Judo of the world! We started to work on it.
▶︎I almost lost my heart
ところが技の説明の日本語字幕から最初の３行くらいを翻訳するのになんと一時間と膨大な時間を要し愕然と。
However, I was astonished to learn that it took a whopping one hour to translate the first three lines of the Japanese subtitles explaining the techniques.
動画の編集だけでも時間が掛かるのに！
And that's just for editing the video!
翻訳を業者にお願いする？費用はどうする？英語のできる友人にお願い？など色々頭に浮かびました。
Should we hire a translation company? What about the cost? Ask a friend who speaks English? Various thoughts came to my mind.
そんな時、「あっ！Google翻訳とかアプリがあるじゃん！」とアイディアが浮かび
Then I thought, "Oh, there are apps like Google Translate! The idea came to me.
「一人じゃ何もできない！この力を借りよう！」と翻訳を開始しました。
I can't do anything on my own! I can't do anything on my own! And so, we started translating.
▶︎Accuracy
日本語の字幕を作り、一行一行アプリで翻訳。
We made Japanese subtitles and translated them line by line in the app.
そんな作業で簡単に翻訳してもらえる！と簡単に思っていました。
It's that easy to get a translation done! I thought it would be easy.
ところが！
However!
説明のまま日本語字幕にしアプリで翻訳してもらうと日本人だからわかる長い文章となると翻訳の精度はガクーンと落ちてしまうという事が分かりまた愕然と！
I was astonished to find out that the accuracy of the translation was much lower when I made Japanese subtitles and had the app translate them into Japanese, and when I used long sentences that I could understand because I am Japanese!
アプリの翻訳した英語を検証しようと日本語から英語へ翻訳された文を再び日本語に翻訳して翻訳精度を確認。
To verify the accuracy of the app's English translation, I translated the sentence from Japanese to English and then back to Japanese to check the accuracy of the translation.
文が長くなればなるほど、アプリも悩んじゃうみたいで適切な表現にはならなかったのです。
The longer the sentence, the more the app seemed to have trouble translating it, so it did not translate it properly.
▶︎Innovation to improve
そこで頭を捻ったのは「文章を短くすれば良いじゃん！」という事。
Then we thought, "Why don't we shorten the sentences? And then we thought, "Why don't we just shorten the sentences?
そして「説明のままの表現を翻訳させなくても分かり易い日本語に変換して翻訳すれば！」という事。
And then, "Why don't you just translate the original description into easy-to-understand Japanese? That is the same as writing a letter in Japanese.
日本語で手紙を書く時と同じです。
It is the same as writing a letter in Japanese.
動画で説明している日本語のまま翻訳させるのではなく、説明を一つ一つ短い文章とする。
Instead of translating the Japanese as it is explained in the video, make each explanation into a short sentence.
そして日本語も分かり易い言葉を言い換え翻訳させる！
And translate the Japanese into easy-to-understand words!
そんな工夫をしてアプリに英語翻訳してもらい字幕を作成。
We made such an effort to have the application translate the English into Japanese and create subtitles.
日英併記の翻訳付き動画の配信が始まったのです。
The video with both Japanese and English translations is now available.
