This past week, the Kanagawa Judo Federation hosted a grand promotion ceremony celebrating promotions to 7th and 8th dan ranks. This prestigious event marks a major milestone in the life of a judoka. While promotions up to 6th dan occur annually, things change significantly from the 7th dan onward. Promotions to these ranks are only considered every two years and are granted only after careful review of one's lifetime contributions and achievements. Not only competitive results, but also contributions as a coach, referee, and efforts to promote and develop judo in the community and beyond are all taken into account. This year, seven distinguished judoka from Kanagawa were promoted to 7th dan.

Tokyo-Kanto Inter-selection Judo Tournament

On Sunday, February 12, the 12th Tokyo-Kanto Inter-Selection Judo Tournament was held at the Kodokan 6th Floor School Dojo.

Thirty-eight instructors of 6-dan and above from Kanto and Tokyo were selected to compete for supremacy in the team competition.

It was the first time in three years since the tournament was canceled due to the Corona disaster last year and the year before.

The matches are held in a single arena in a tense atmosphere under the watchful eyes of the judo federation presidents and other executive officials from Tokyo and Kanto prefectures.

After the opening ceremony at 2:00 p.m., the matches began.

The selected members from Tokyo and Kanto went back and forth, and a tense battle ensued.

I participated in the 9th game as the Kanto team was losing 2-4-2.

In the match, I was unable to gain an advantage due to my opponent's skillful kumite techniques, and more than one minute had passed.

After a minute and a half had passed, I was able to grab the back collar, and immediately applied an Uchimata, which caused my opponent to roll over and score a "Waza-Ari".

Both fighters continued to engage in fierce exchanges, but time ran out.

The time was up, and I was able to win the match by Yusei-Gachi.

As a team, Kanto won 18 matches and Tokyo won 9.

As a first-time entrant, I'd like to share my thoughts on

It is a great tournament where eminent and fierce players gather.

I was very impressed with the participants, including Kuriyama Sensei and Naito Sensei, who are members of the Yokohama Saturday Judo-Club .

Mogi Sensei, my favorite senior judo instructor from my hometown in Saitama, and Koike Sensei, who has been my friend and mentor since I was a student.

From Marunouchi Judo Club, Abe Sensei, same age with me , participated in the tournament.

It was a very valuable experience for me to see so many of my friends selected to participate in the tournament together and to be able to show their energy.

Winning or losing a match may be important.

But it was such a wonderful time for us to participate in the same tournament, to meet again in good spirits, to discuss each other's current status, and to laugh and spend time together.

I wanted to compete in this tournament again next year.
